At least one lane of the stretch of State Highway 1 closed by a massive slip should reopen on Thursday.
The highway has been closed between Waipara, just north of Christchurch, and Kaikoura after earthquake aftershocks and heavy rain caused the slip on Friday.
The New Zealand Transport Agency expects to reopen at least one lane by about 4pm on Thursday.
Crews have worked around the clock since the slip was stabilised on Monday to remove an estimated 30,000 cubic metres of debris.
