The army is investigating how ammunition fell of the back of one of its vehicles and was driven over by a motorist.
About 800 rounds of blank ammunition fell off an army truck travelling on the Napier -Taihape Road on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Kristian Dunne says the truck was travelling from Waiouru to the port of Napier with supplies for the naval ship HMNZS Canterbury.
Major Dunne says a motorist told police his car ran over one of many bullets strewn over the highway.
All ammunition has been recovered and military police will investigate the incident, he says.
