Waikato council steps up flood watch on rivers

6:26 pm on 15 September 2010

The Waikato regional council is stepping up its flood monitoring for the Waikato and Waipa rivers.

The region is sodden as a result of continuing rain, with more forecast over the next few days.

An emergency management spokesperson, Greg Ryan, says he expects an increase in river and lake levels, which are already high.

Mr Ryan says he expects the levels to be managed within the council's flood control schemes.

As a precaution, it has activated a flood operations centre at its Hamilton headquarters in case they rise higher than forecast.

Mr Ryan says the council is liaising with Might River Power and Genesis Energy on water flows from Lake Taupo and the hydro lakes.
