Police in Wellington have charged a teenage girl with several robberies and attacks on taxi drivers.

The 17-year-old appeared in the Wellington District Court on Tuesday charged with aggravated robbery, robbery and theft targeting the company Wellington Combined Taxis.

Detective Constable Craig Whitley says the teenager fled with money from one taxi on 29 August, before stealing another driver's purse during an assault later that evening.

Mr Whitley says a third attack took place on 5 September, when the teenager allegedly assaulted a taxi driver with a knife and struck him on the head with another weapon.

There was a struggle and she bit the driver's finger, which required surgery, he said.

The accused will reappear in court on Friday.
