Rivals concerned Wellington taxi firm may go national

10:20 pm on 16 September 2010

Some Wellington taxi firms are worried the capital's largest cab company is out to establish a national brand which they say will foster anti-competitive behaviour.

Wellington Combined Taxis has secured a dedicated taxi stand at Wellington Hospital, one of the many exclusive arrangements it has with businesses in the city which also includes supermarkets and hotels.

Some taxi firms say Wellington Combined Taxis is looking to establish a national brand called Blue Bubble.

Kiwi Cabs and Green Cabs are worried that will create what they call a monopolistic approach nationwide.

Wellington Combined Taxis general manager Kevin Braid is refusing to comment on the claim, but says there is nothing to stop companies from securing exclusive arrangements.

Mr Braid is a director of Blue Bubble Taxis. Other shareholders are Blue Star Taxis in Christchurch and Auckland Co-operative Taxis.
