Motorway opponents criticise submission process

7:29 am on 19 September 2010

A community group opposing the Waterview motorway connection in Auckland says the project's rushed submission process is hindering democracy.

The North Western Community Association says allowing just 20 working days to file public submissions to the Environmental Protection Agency is ridiculous.

Chairman Bill MacKay says with 54 resource consents involved, there are thousands of pages to sift through, making the process a daunting prospect.

However Environment Minister Nick Smith says the project has been debated for years, the route is well-known and there are no major surprises in the details.

He says four weeks for submissions is no less than required for any other consent and is confident the process will not be compromised by that.
