A man police say caused a fatal crash as he tried to escape arrest has been remanded in custody on manslaughter charges.

Phillip Bannan is accused of the manslaughter of 73-year-old Norman Fitt and his friend, Deirdre Jordan, 67, who died after their car was hit by Mr Bannan's in central Christchurch on 26 August.

Mr Bannan, 22, was initially charged with driving while disqualified, but police on Monday added charges of with driving with excess blood alcohol, dangerous driving and two manslaughter charges.

He appeared in Christchurch District Court where Judge Brian Callaghan remanded him in custody until 1 October.
