A Tauranga man has been fined $2500 for poaching and selling undersized paua.
Simon Christopher Rawiri, 41, appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Monday charged with possessing fish unlawfully for the purpose of sale.
Between March and April this year, he sold 66 undersized paua to a fellow resident of Papamoa for $40.
The legal minimum size for paua in Bay of Plenty area is 125 millimetres, but the paua ranged in size from 63mm to 96mm.
Gatherers are allowed to take a maximum of 10 paua per day.
The Ministry of Fisheries says people should be aware that it is also illegal to buy seafood from anyone other than a licensed fish receiver.
