More wintry weather forecast

8:09 am on 21 September 2010

MetService forecasts more bitterly cold weather for Southland and Clutha on Tuesday and westerly gales for the central North Island.

The new fronts follow a large storm at the weekend that brought heavy snow and knocked out power to more than 60,000 homes, farms and businesses.

MetService says the North Island can expect some respite from the cold weather at the weekend, when sunny spells set in.

But it expects westerlies to continue over the South Island.

State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound is still closed due to snow.

Chains are essential for motorists driving on State Highway 73 from Arthurs Pass to Otira and on State Highway Seven from the Hanmer turnoff to Springs Junction.
