Figures issued by the Department of Labour show continued growth in the number of job vacancies advertised online.

The Jobs Online report shows skilled job vacancies increased by 7.7% and the number of total vacancies went up by 7.4% in the three months to August.

Labour market information head Benedikte Jensen says the growth indicates the economy is continuing its gradual improvement.

She says data taken from online job sites such as Seek, show growth in skilled job vacancies was strongest in IT, up 12%.

The strongest regional growth was in Christchurch, with a 10% increase in skilled job vacancies, followed by Auckland.
