Roof collapse prompts look at building codes

6:38 pm on 21 September 2010

Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson says the Government will examine building codes as they relate to snow build-up after the Stadium Southland roof collapsed on Saturday.

Mr Williamson toured the Invercargill site on Tuesday afternoon and says he is shocked by what he saw.

Engineers appointed by the stadium's insurer, NZI, and Invercargill City Council are investigating as the stadium is dismantled.

Mr Williamson says he will not hesitate to change the building code if it is warranted once more is known about the stadium's collapse.

Mr Williamson says he is confident the stadium was built within the building code applicable at the time.

Engineers will supervise the demolition and try to piece together the sequence of events that led to the failure of the roof truss system.

The Government is taking a keen interest in the investigation because it may point to wider structural issues in similar buildings around the country.
