Summer sports season delayed in Wellington

4:03 pm on 22 September 2010

The start of the summer sports season in Wellington is expected to be delayed by up to three weeks because rain has held up renewal work on sports grounds.

In August, 205mm of rain fell compared to 135mm at the same time last year.

Wellington City Council says the season is meant to begin at Labour Weekend.

But sportsfield manager Trevor Jackson, says grounds are so saturated that staff are behind on work to redevelop fields, including reseeding and relevelling fields.

He says it is likely the start dates for the season will be staggered as various grounds dry out before others.
