The Ranfurly Shield will stay in Southland for at least another fortnight.
The Stags turned back a determined challenge from Auckland to win 9-6 in Invercargill on Thursday night and remain top of rugby's provincial championship.
It is Southland's first-ever Shield win over Auckland.
It was 3-all at halftime with Matt Berquist's second penalty giving Auckland the lead just after the break.
Robbie Robinson equalised promptly, then kicked the winning penalty goal from near the sideline with about 10 minutes to go.
Southland's next challenge is from Canterbury.
