Truck driver impaled by canoe

6:35 pm on 23 September 2010

A truck driver has been impaled by a canoe in a freak accident near Levin.

Police say a canoe appears to have come loose from a trailer being towed by a vehicle heading south on State Highway 1 on Thursday.

It smashed the windscreen of a fully-loaded car transporter heading in the opposite direction.

The 64-year-old driver was impaled and his vehicle then crashed into a nearby paddock, blocking a railway line.

The man was cut free from his vehicle and flown to Palmerston North Hospital, where he is in a critical condition.

The railway line has been reopened.
