Club helping police after driver impaled by boat

The Wellington Rowing Club says a truck and trailer carrying its boats was involved in a freak accident south of Levin in which a truck driver was impaled by a skiff.

The 64-year-old man remains in a critical condition at Palmerston North Hospital on Friday.

Police say the skiff appears to have come loose from a trailer being towed by a vehicle heading south on State Highway 1 before smashing though the windscreen of a car transporter heading in the opposite direction on Thursday.

Club captain Craig Lawson says at this stage, it is not known how the accident happened but the club is working closely with police.

Mr Lawson says club members are shocked and upset, and their thoughts and prayers go out to the truck driver and his family and friends.
