The regeneration of the Matata lagoon following the floods of 2005 is to be celebrated by the Eastern Bay of Plenty community, in conjunction with the Birds-A-Plenty festival.
Whakatane District Council says the rejuvenated lagoon is renowned in bird-watching circles as a wetland habitat of great significance to many species.
Guided tours, bird spotting competitions and craft stalls will be held on 2 October, starting with a blessing by iwi.
The 2005 floods led to the lagoon being filled with sand and debris.
