Police still investigating driver's impalement

Police say it is too early to say whether anyone will be charged in connection with a truck driver being impaled by a rowing skiff south of Levin.

Their investigation into the accident, which occurred last Thursday, is continuing. The 64-year-old driver is still seriously ill in Palmerston North Hospital.

Police say it appears the skiff came loose from a trailer being towed by a vehicle heading north on State Highway 1.

It smashed through the windscreen into the driver of a south-bound car transporter, which swerved across the main trunk rail line - which runs parallel to the highway at that point - and came to a stop in a paddock.
