Two abduction attempts on children in streets

8:01 pm on 28 September 2010

Police in Christchurch are alarmed by the attempted abduction of two children from busy roads in the city.

Detective Sergeant Earle Borrell says that investigators are keeping an open mind but that at this stage they don't believe the incidents are linked.

He says a man grabbed a 10-year-old girl on Centaurus Rd in St Martins at nine o'clock on Saturday morning.

The man had short dark hair and was driving a red car with tinted windows.

That evening, at seven o'clock, an attempt was made to take an 11-year-old girl from Harewood Rd in Bishopdale.

That man had dark shaved hair, facial hair and a tattoo on his neck. He was driving a black car with tinted windows.

Det Sgt Borrell advises parents to warn their children about stranger danger. He says police are following several potential leads.
