A former police officer from Alexandra has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for lying about a car crash in which he was involved.
Neil Ford was sentenced in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday for perjury, after he lied about who caused the crash in July 2005 between him and a boy aged 17.
Another former police officer has pleaded guilty to wilfully attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The teenager was convicted of causing the crash.
Police say it was not until 18 months ago that they became aware that Ford and the other officer had deliberately covered up crucial evidence about the case.
Both officers resigned after Ford was found guilty.
