Maori Women's Welfare League 'still relevant'

The head of the Maori Women's Welfare League says the organisation is still relevant in a modern Maori society.

More than1000 people were expected at a powhiri on Wednesday for its annual conference at Hastings Boys High.

League president Meaghan Joe says the hui will discuss cervical screening, liquor reform, parental consent for school health screening programmes and Maori representation in the governance of universities and polytechnics.

Ms Joe told Waatea News the league continues to be a place where wahine help shape Maori communities.
