Memorial service for slain police officers

8:43 pm on 29 September 2010

About 1000 people have attended a service at the Police College near Wellington to remember officers who have died.

Family, friends and members of the police attended the annual service at Porirua to mark the day, which was commemorated throughout Australasia and the South Pacific.

No police officer has been killed by another person while on duty in the past year.

However, Police Commissioner Howard Broad says there have been some near- misses and he is looking at how to better protect those serving under him.

Mr Broad laid a wreath at the Memorial Wall which bears the names of 29 police and traffic officers killed doing their jobs since 1890.

The service also honoured serving and retired staff who passed away in the past 12 months.

Police dogs were present in honour of their fellow canine, Gage, who was shot to death in Christchurch in July.
