Flood warning for Waikato

6:42 pm on 29 September 2010

Waikato Regional Council has issued another flood warning, as forecast heavy rain threatens to place significant pressure on swollen rivers and saturated catchments in the region.

It says between 150mm and 200mm of rain will fall on the upper slopes of Mt Taranaki in the 24 hours from 6am on Thursday, while 70mm to 100mm will fall on the lower slopes and the hill country further inland, extending into southern Waikato and Tongariro National Park

If that happens, the council says it could result in higher levels of the Waikato and Waipa rivers than seen last week, with the potential for flooding.

The council says farmers and the public should be prepared to take action required to protect people, stock and property.
