Three prosecuted since child discipline law change

Three people have now been prosecuted for smacking children since changes to the Crimes Act.

However, the last person to face court action was discharged without conviction.

Police say their seventh review since legislation relating to child discipline was altered in 2007 shows results that are in line with previous findings.

The latest report covers the six months from 23 December 2009 to 22 June 2010.

There were 25 cases classed as involving smacking. Thirteen resulted in a warning, and 11 were resolved in another way or had no action taken.

Police say the level of prosecutions suggests guidelines are working well and the findings show officers are continuing to use their discretion.

One person was prosecuted in the review period before the current review. At that time, that brought the number of people prosecuted for smacking to two.
