Slip debris still being cleared from Manawatu Gorge

Workers are still clearing debris from a rail line through the Manawatu Gorge following a slip on Saturday.

The line was closed after a Fonterra train carrying 400,000 litres of milk hit the slip and derailed.

A spokesperson for KiwiRail, Jenni Austen, says fixing the blockage is a painstaking task, as there is a lot of unstable material that needs to be removed carefully.

Ms Austen says at this stage, the line will remain closed until the weekend.

The locomotive could be removed from the rubble on Friday, but it is more likely this will also happen at the weekend.
