Five injured after trains collide near capital

Five people have been taken to hospital with minor injuries after a collision involving two trains near Wellington.

The trains collided north of the capital after a train bound for Paraparaumu carrying 40 passengers hit a landslip and derailed at 3.15pm on Thursday.

A south-bound train leaving Plimmerton with 14 passengers on board then clipped a cab of the derailed train.

KiwiRail subsequently closed the line, which is also the main trunk line, after slips between two tunnels at Ngauranga.

Tranz Metro advised on Thursday night that services on the Paraparumu line have been suspended.

Tranz Metro says it is trying to arrange buses from Wellington for passengers to Paraparumu, but suggests passengers make alternative travel plans.

Another slip near Pukerua Bay will also limit services for the next two days.

Slips closed the Johnsonville line until 9pm and commuters were told to make their own way home.

Buses replaced the Capital Connection commuter rail service to Palmerston North.
