Driver who fled police admits manslaughter charges

6:47 pm on 1 October 2010

A man who fled police and crashed, killing a couple in Christchurch, has pleaded guilty to two charges of manslaughter.

Phillip Bannan, 22, unemployed, also faces charges of driving drunk, driving while disqualified and dangerous driving.

Norman Fitt and Deirdre Jordan were killed on 26 August when Bannan ran a red light on Fitzgerald Avenue as he attempted to evade a police patrol car.

Police say his blood-alcohol level was more than two times the legal limit.

Judge Stephen Erber remanded Bannan in custody for sentencing on the manslaughter charges on 15 December.

A hearing on the other charges will be held the same day.
