The Maniapoto Maori Trust Board and the Crown have agreed to terms for co-management of the Waipa River.
Board chair Tipa Bell says a major clean-up is needed to stop pollution of both the Waipa and the Waikato river where they meet downstream at Ngaruawahia.
Under a deed of settlement signed this week, the Government has committed to spend $30 million over the next 20 years.
Mr Bell says there's a lot of work to be done.
