A police officer was repeatedly hit over the head with her own torch as she went to handcuff a woman involved in a domestic dispute in Hamilton.
Two officers went to a Hammond St address at about 10.30pm on Sunday, following reports an elderly man had been assaulted.
While one officer entered the lounge to check on the victim, the other questioned a 38-year-old woman they had met at the door.
Acting Waikato District Commander Detective Inspector Russell Le Prou says although a cut on the head is a minor injury, it is a reminder of the inherent risks of policing.
The woman faces a range of assault charges.
The officer has received medical treatment and been cleared to return to work.
