Helicopter crashes on Banks Peninsula

1:15 pm on 5 October 2010

A helicopter pilot has been injured when his aircraft crashed on Banks Peninsula.

Emergency services were notified of the crash in the Kaituna Valley area of Mount Herbert at 8am on Tuesday.

The pilot, who was the aircraft's sole occupant, sustained moderate injuries and was flown by rescue helicopter to Christchurch Hospital.

The aircraft was found among trees on a ridge.

It's believed the pilot crash-landed due to a mechanical failure.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter pilot Stuart Farquhar says it appears one of the blades on the Robinson R22 helicopter struck a bank during the controlled crash-landing.
