Great white shark caught near Wellington harbour

A Wellington fisherman has caught a great white shark near the city's harbour.

Chef Alfonso Basile and friend Peter Amitrano were fishing for moki off the south coast of the city on Monday night, when they came across the 2.7-metre shark, caught in his net laid near Barrett's Reef about 1km offshore.

He says the shark had already died, and it took about half an hour for his dinghy to drag the carcass to shore.

The shark's remains have now been taken to the Te Papa museum for analysis.
