India seeks to reschedule Twenty20 matches

7:16 am on 5 March 2009

India's cricket board is looking to reschedule the Twenty20 league in the wake of an attack on Sri Lankan players in Pakistan.

The Indian government on Wednesday said security forces would be preoccupied with general elections.

At least six members of the Sri Lanka team and an assistant coach were wounded when gunmen ambushed their bus in Pakistan on Tuesday. Five police and a bus driver were killed.

The attack in Lahore has heightened security concerns for the league, involving many international players, including New Zealanders. It is due to be staged over April and May.

Tuesday's incident had echoes of an attack on the Indian city of Mumbai last November in which about 170 people were killed.

It led to the Indian cricket team cancelling its planned tour of Pakistan, and the Sri Lankan team taking its place.

The international cricketers' union has warned Indian Premier League organisers that they risk losing the game's superstars if they do not respond to terror attacks by beefing up their own security.

Women's fixture to go ahead

Australia will review its security for a women's World Cup cricket match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka to be held in Canberra next week.

New Zealand will take part in the ninth edition of the international tournament, which begins on Sunday.

International Cricket Council media manager Sami al Hassan says the fixture will definitely go ahead.
