Gold wanted out of Hauraki settlement

Conservationists in Coromandel want gold left out of the Hauraki Treaty settlement.

Hauraki confederation chair Paul Majurey says the iwi's problems with the Crown started when gold was discovered on their land, so gold needs to be on the table now.

But Thames lawyer, Denis Tegg, a long time anti-mining campaigner, told Waatea News that gold and other Crown minerals need to be (left) out of the claim process.

However, he said he has no objection to Conservation land being part of the settlement.
