Former All Black coach John Mitchell, who was stabbed during a home invasion in South Africa, says the security company that patrols his apartment complex has a lot to answer for.
Mitchell, who had been sharing the apartment with fellow New Zealander and Golden Lion's rugby coach Wayne Taylor, says he wants more secure accommodation after the attack.
Both men are staying in a hotel until they find a new place to live.
The attack happened when Mitchell was in bed about 10pm Saturday night (local time).
The 46-year-old is in the same block as conditioning coach and fellow New Zealander Wayne Taylor and, according to the Golden Lions Rugby Union, Mitchell initially thought the intruder was Taylor playing a joke on him.
Mitchell wrestled with the intruder and was then stabbed by a second intruder in the upper arm and thigh. They stole a laptop, cellphone and cash.
Taylor took Mitchell to a clinic where he received "a few stitches", and has since been released.
Mitchell has had trauma counselling, but says the ordeal has not put him off working and living in South Africa, where he has been contracted to coach the Golden Lions Super rugby team for the next three years.
He was appointed All Blacks coach in 2001 and led the team to the 2003 World Cup in Australia. He was not reappointed after their semifinal loss to the Wallabies.
