Gowns mooted for district court lawyers

The Law Society is canvassing its members about making the wearing of gowns mandatory during district court trials and sentencings.

The suggestion is one of the initiatives being considered by the society to ensure the maintenance of minimum standards in the legal profession.

Gowns are already worn in the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and in the country's high and employment courts.

Society president Jonathan Temm says extending the wearing of gowns to the district court is an appropriate step to try to maintain minimum standards of formality.

He says the overwhelming majority of lawyers support the move.

Chief district court Judge Russell Johnson says he thinks the move will add to the dignity of the court.

The final decision on whether to implement the change, rests with Judge Johnson and other members of the judiciary.

He expects to make a decision in the next couple of months.
