The Prime Minister and Auckland's new mayor-elect have had their first private meeting to discuss the future of the new city.

After a working dinner at the Manukau City Council on Thursday evening, John Key and Len Brown came out smiling, both saying they are confident they will have a positive working relationship.

Mr Brown told media he believes he will get the resources he needs from the Government to carry out the major rail projects he campaigned on.

Both men say, however, that the details of timeframes and funding will have to be the subject of further discussion.
