The Civil Aviation Authority says the wreckage of a helicopter that crashed in Bluff Harbour, killing two people, has been recovered.

The partially submerged Robinson R22 was found at about midday on Friday, after being reported missing on a flight out of Invercargill at 2pm on Thursday.

The CAA says the recovery happened on Thursday night and two investigators have been sent to Invercargill. It says the wreckage was taken to a secure site in Southland for examination.

The dead men have been named as flight instructor Jason Wright and trainee pilot Allan Munro, 67.
