Assurance given by DoC on trout poison trial

The Department of Conservation is assuring anglers that a planned trial using poison in a stream in Wellington will not be extended to other waterways.

DoC has applied for consent to introduce rotenone into the upper Karori reservoir to eradicate brown trout and restore the stream as a native habitat.

Anglers who fish for brown trout are worried the trial could be extended to other waterways.

But DoC says there are no plans for further use of the toxin after the Karori reservoir and anglers have nothing to fear if the trial goes ahead this summer.
