Auckland is heading for a major housing shortage and in 20 years will have 90,000 fewer homes than needed, a Government report says.
The Department of Building and Housing's report into the state of housing in the New Zealand, released on Wednesday, says the 16,000 homes built every year is not enough.
While Auckland will have a shortfall of 90,000 houses by by 2031, the Department says, the rest of the country will be turning around the deficit.
The report says a slowing construction industry is partly to blame, especially because the population is growing.
However some demand for housing is being delayed because young people are opting to stay at home longer and the average household size is increasing, it says.
