The latest recall by Toyota could affect about 2000 cars in New Zealand.
The recall is due to brake defects in some Toyota Highlander and Lexus models produced between 2003 and 2006, although the company says no accidents have occurred as a result.
Toyota New Zealand spokesperson Mark Rounthwaite says the company knows of some 1800 cars sold new in New Zealand but there may be many more imported used from Japan.
He says the company will contact affected purchasers, but it also needs help to track down car owners of second-hand import models.
The recall could involve more than 1.5 million cars worldwide.
