Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson has opened a new home as part of a project aimed at making first homes more attainable.

The Simple House project was started by the Government and managed by the Department of Building and Housing.

The first, opened on Friday, is in Otara in South Auckland and will be put up for sale over summer.

Such homes can be built anywhere in the country and are designed to more quickly get through the consenting process.

Mr Williamson says its design gives new options to first home buyers.

The homes can be built anywhere in the country and their layouts can be changed easily, he says.
