Avalanche warning issued for alpine tracks

2:39 pm on 23 October 2010

The Department of Conservation says sections of some walking tracks in the South Island should not be attempted this weekend because of a high risk of avalanches.

It says recent snowfalls in the Southern Alps coupled with warm temperatures have resulted in more avalanche activity.

DoC says the current snow loading means the alpine sections of the Routeburn, Kepler and Milford tracks are unsafe for tramping.
