Government urged to save rare fish

The Green Party is calling on the Government to take action to save a rare South Island fish species.

The Greens co-leader, Russel Norman, says the fish is found only in the Nevis River in Central Otago and is threatened by an appeal by Pioneer Generation against a ban on damming the river.

But Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson told Parliament on Tuesday the Gollum galaxiid is also found on Stewart Island and in parts of Southland.

She says the fish is on the Department of Conservation's recovery programme and is being monitored.

Ms Wilkinson says the department has not decided what role it will take in the appeal process.
