Council plans legal action to demolish Coromandel commune

The Thames-Coromandel District Council is taking court action to have 14 buildings demolished on a commune in Whitanga.

The Wilderland Community has 10 long-term residents and operates an organic farm on the Whitianga Estuary, on the Coromandel Peninsula.

It has been in talks with the council for some time about the future of its buildings.

The council says it is acting to protect public safety in taking court proceedings, as the Fire Service has declared the structures, including some homes, dangerous.
