All Black coach escapes traffic ticket

8:18 pm on 28 October 2010

All Black coach Graham Henry was not ticketed for speeding over Labour Weekend because the officer who pulled him over was not qualified to issue one.

TV3 has reported that Mr Henry was caught traveling at 81km/h along Auckland's Tamaki Drive on Friday night.

This was 31 kilometres over the speed limit, on a holiday weekend when police had announced the tolerance would be 4 km/h over the limit.

While police have not named Mr Henry, they have denied a prominent New Zealander was let off because of who he is, and say the officer who pulled him over was not certified to issue tickets or use speed detection equipment.

Had Mr Henry been punished, he would have had 40 demerit points and receive a $300 fine.

The editor of the car buyer's Dog and Lemon Guide, Clive Matthew-Wilson, says the explanation is a farce as police vowed to lower their tolerance to just 4km/h for the weekend.

Mr Matthew-Wikson also questions why a police officer who could not legally do his job was out on the road in the first place.
