Commission to look at NIWA salmon hatchery bid

The Commerce Commission is considering a bid to buy the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research's Silverstream Hatchery.

Salmon Smolt New Zealand, a joint venture formed by six firms predominantly involved in South Island salmon farming, is seeking clearance to acquire the hatchery's assets from NIWA, which is a Crown Research Institute.

Silverstream Hatchery supplies eyed salmon eggs and salmon smolt on a commercial basis to salmon operators and recreational organisations.

The Commerce Commission says its role in considering the application is to determine whether the acquisition will substantially lessen competition in the market.
