Guild says drug recalls undermine Medsafe

The Pharmacy Guild says the number of recalls of drugs this year is undermining the reputation of the government's drug regulatory body, Medsafe.

Seven recalls have affected up to 70,000 people.

The Pharmacy Guild says the recalls have left pharmacists out of pocket, and confused about recall processes, with different instructions in some cases for contacting patients.

However, Medsafe says it takes the decision to recall drugs very seriously, and it decides with each drug company how a recall should take place.

The outcome of a Ministry of Health review of recall processes is expected next year.
