Police point finger at pursued after more crashes

Police say a driver and a motorcyclist they pursued in separate incidents in the southern South Island within 24 hours were responsible for the accidents and injuries that followed.

On Friday, a 24-year-old motorcyclist suffered moderate injuries after he crashed into a ditch near Milton while trying to evade police - who say he reached speeds of up to 150 km/h.

And a 27-year-old passenger is in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital after a car being chased by a patrol car in Invercargill crashed.

Police say a Mazda MX coupe hit a centre island on Liddel St at 3.30am on Saturday after a pursuit that lasted a minute and a half.

Southland area commander Barry Taylor says that the car was seen on the wrong side of the road and that, after initially appearing it would stop for police, drove off.

Inspector Taylor says that during the pursuit, which covered about two kilometres, the police car reached speeds of up to 90 km/h.

The southern district road policing manager, Andrew Burns, says it is a clear and simple choice for people to stop when requested to do so by police, and if an accident follows a pursuit it is the fault of those who decide to flee.
