Council reserve occupiers vow to return

8:03 pm on 2 November 2010

Ngati Kahu protesters who occupied a council reserve at Taipa in the Far North last month say the action is over for now, but they will be back.

The group moved on to land used by Taipa Sailing Club, saying it was stolen by the Crown and demanded its return.

The occupation ended quietly on Friday night after Far North District Council said it would seek a trespass order.

But group leader John Popata says further action is planned. He wants to discuss its grievance with Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson.

He says the group will stage more occupations.

Mr Popata says the site does not fall within the Treaty process because it is council owned.
