Concern at roadside vendors selling fireworks

9:31 pm on 3 November 2010

Retail chain the Warehouse suspects roadside vendors may be contributing to an increase in the number of fireworks brought into the country this year.

The Environment Minister's office has released figures showing that imports of fireworks have doubled - to more than 1100 tonnes - compared to last year (though the Environmental Risk Management Authority says last year's figure was exceptionally low).

The Warehouse says its importation of fireworks is no bigger than in the past few years, but merchandising manager Nick Tuck says he has noticed an increase in "pop-up stores" and roadside vendors in recent years, which is concerning.

"They may not have the same levels of scrutiny as we do," he says, "nor take the customer's safety as highly as we do."
