Police are investigating a suspicious fire at St Patrick's Catholic Cathedral in Napier.

Detective Mike Signal says the fire started just after 9.30pm on Wednesday in a garden near the church, and spread to shrubs near one wall.

He says the heat of the fire blew out a window and caused smoke damage to about 50 square metres of the wall.

Mr Signal says there was no damage to the interior of the church.

He says there have been several reports of teenagers on bikes in the area about the time of the fire.
